Assistant Headteacher Inclusion

Hello, my name is Marium Rafiq, and I am the Assistant Headteacher of Inclusion at GEMS Founders School. I am a purpose-driven leader with over 12 years of teaching experience across the UK and the UAE where I seek to ensure that every student—regardless of their background, barrier, or starting point—has access to an equitable, high-quality education and the opportunity to thrive.

I hold the NPQL in Special Education and I am deeply passionate about Human Rights, particularly the fundamental right to education. I believe inclusion is not an initiative or a department, it is a responsibility that belongs to us all. Advocating for students with additional needs is central to my work, and I am committed to breaking down barriers so that every learner feels seen, heard, and valued.

Alongside my work in inclusion, I have a strong background in safeguarding and child protection. I understand that students cannot flourish academically unless they feel safe, secure, and supported. I approach safeguarding with vigilance, integrity, and compassion, always placing the wellbeing of children at the heart of every decision. Creating safe environments where students are protected, respected, and empowered is fundamental to my leadership.

I pride myself on strong, value-led leadership built on kindness, empathy, and understanding. I recognise that every child’s journey is unique, and I am dedicated to understanding the needs of all learners and ensuring those needs are met with compassion, professionalism, and high expectations. I care deeply about students’ academic achievement, personal development, happiness, and mental wellbeing—because true progress looks different for every individual.

I strive to build inclusive cultures where diversity is celebrated, barriers are removed, and every student is supported to reach their full potential—whatever that may look like for them, working closely with staff, students and their families.
